Local Government

No Local Input = No Local Control

For local government, Proposition 1 is unmanageable. It's complex, confusing, and sets up confrontation between employers and employees. If passed, the City of Olympia will be expected to administer the provisions of the initiative with no funding. A stunning example of an unfunded mandate!

The City will need significant staffing to educate, enforce, and adjudicate a myriad of confusing and conflicting provisions that will be impossible to implement. Even if you could find the funding for multiple staff members to manage the program, they will fail due to the complexity of the proposal. The measure was written by organizers outside Olympia, without input from city leaders. If it passes, city leaders won’t be able to change it to fit local needs.

Steve Hall

City Manager of Olympia 2003 - 2019

"Good ideas are often thwarted by bad implementation. The good sentiments of this proposal are lost in what will become a bureaucratic nightmare that won't help employees and will harm employers. With no clear plan for implementation, Proposition 1 could reduce funding for police, fire, housing, and parks. Join me in VOTING NO on Prop. 1"
